Haleakala Sunset

Towering over the island of Maui and visible from just about any point, Haleakala Crater is a force of nature in every sense. At 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano is the stage for a breathtaking range of landscapes—and skyscapes. Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, and legend goes that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood on the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the day last longer.

Many visitors wake up early to drive to the Haleakala Visitor Center, the best spot to watch what may be the most spectacular sunrise on earth. As the sun peeks over the horizon, an ever-changing swirl of color and light dance across the vast sea of clouds—a sight described by Mark Twain as “the most sublime spectacle I have ever witnessed.” Perhaps just as impressive are Haleakala’s sunsets and the bright, starry skies revealed at night.

Road To Hana

Along Maui's rugged eastern coastline is the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers. The legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului; however, the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it's fraught with narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and incredible island views.

The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views. While it’s all about the journey, once you reach the beautiful and quiet town of Hana, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip.

Historic St. Sophia’s Church marks your arrival into Hana, where the pastures roll right up to the main street. The historic Hana-Maui Resort is a luxurious retreat in this village rooted in Hawaiian tradition. Browse the Hasegawa General Store and Hana Ranch Store for unique souvenirs. Swim and sunbathe at Hana Beach Park or Hamoa Beach, cited by author James Michener as the most beautiful beach in the Pacific. Sunbathe at Waianapanapa State Park, a beautiful black sand beach. Or visit Hale Piilani, the state’s largest heiau (Hawaiian temple), in Kahanu Garden, one of five National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hawaii.

Beyond Hana, venture 10 miles south to the outskirts of Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu. There you’ll find the Pipiwai Trail where you can hike to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls.

Hiking

Maui offers over 100 amazing hiking trails across the island ranging from easy to hard. With stunning landscapes, waterfalls, bamboo forests, wild fruit trees, vibrant plants & flowers, black, white, and red sand beaches, and epic pools to jump in. Check out all the options on All Trails! Be sure to bring hiking shoes as trails are often muddy.

Spiritual Shit

Lahaina Jodo Mission

The mission is a replica of an authentic Japanese Buddhist temple. Explore these peaceful grounds and you'll discover a towering pagoda and an enormous bronze Buddha statue, 12 feet high and roughly 3 ½ tons. The statue was installed in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. The grounds and buildings of the mission are open to the public and voluntary contributions are accepted.

Maui Dharma Center

The Maui Dharma Center follows the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni who lived over 2,500 years ago.
The Center is dedicated to creating the opportunity to meet, utilize and integrate these ancient, humanitarian spiritual values into everyday modern life. The highest Buddhist goal is to attain the perfect union of compassion and wisdom in order to benefit others.
This is the path and our collective aspiration.

The Sacred Garden

The Sacred Garden offers two labyrinths, a beautiful Buddha garden, Mother Shrine, water lily and lotus ponds with koi and some amazing tropical birds! Complementary tea, hot chocolate and water are always available to soothe your soul. Come to celebrate, grieve, get inspired, rejuvenate, heal, breathe, relax, or give service! Whether you just want to bask in the presence of unique tropical plants and beautiful orchids, or get inspired to create your own sacred garden at home, The Sacred Garden on Maui will fill you with ideas while filling you with peace! The Sacred Garden has two labyrinths—walking meditations or contemplative paths that are equally loved by all. Whether walked for “fun” or for clarity, stress release and self-discovery, it is an experience not to be missed.

Lumeria Maui

Lumeria Maui offers classes and workshops in yoga, meditation, healing arts & metaphysical studies, horticulture and culture, dance & movement therapies for community students and island visitors. Schedules incorporate meditation, yoga, Hawaiian heritage, movement, ecology & new thought classes.

Pi'ilanihale Heiau

Pi'ilanihale Heiau (also known as Hale O Pi' Ilani Heiau) is located in Kahanu Garden, a National Tropical Botanical Park near the town of Hana on the Island of Maui. The heiau (place of worship) is the largest one on the Island of Maui and is one of the most important archeological sites in the Hawaiian Islands. Wander leisurely around the garden and linger at what intrigues you – plants, archaeological and cultural features. You create your own adventure. Meet the people of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia through the plants that are so integral to their culture.
